Background and Establishment

The existence of a university in any region plays an important role in advancing scientific development and contributing to cultural, social, and economic progress. Bushehr Province, with a history spanning several thousand years, has long been one of the important centers of knowledge, culture, and civilizational interaction along the Persian Gulf. The history of education in this region dates back centuries. The “University or School of Rivardashir” in present-day Rishahr was considered an important center of knowledge in its time and made a valuable contribution to the advancement of learning and the education of scholars.

In the contemporary era, the establishment of Saadat School in 1317 AH marked a turning point in the history of modern education in the province. Following Tehran's Dar al-Funun, this school was among the oldest institutions in Iran established according to the modern educational model. It played an important role in promoting the scientific and cultural level of Bushehr and contributed to the development of education in southern Iran.

Despite this valuable heritage, Bushehr Province did not have a comprehensive and independent university before the Islamic Revolution. The need to establish a higher education institution suited to the province's capacities and strategic position, particularly in view of the development of industries and the growing importance of the region, became increasingly evident.

In Mehr 1371 , the university began its educational activities with the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering, admitting 69 students in two programs, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, with 4 faculty members. At that time, all educational activities were conducted in the current Engineering Faculty building, while the university campus was still at the beginning of its development.

In Azar 1371 , the university's organizational structure was approved by the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education, marking the beginning of its administrative and educational development. Later, in 1375 , following the approval of the Higher Education Development Council, the name “University of Bushehr” was changed to “Persian Gulf University.” The name reflects the university's historical, cultural, and geographical identity and its deep connection with the Persian Gulf.

University Development

Persian Gulf University's educational activities initially began with Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering. However, as its educational and research capacities expanded, the university gradually broadened the scope of its activities. In subsequent years, various faculties were established in fields including basic sciences, humanities, literature and humanities, oil, gas and petrochemicals, business and economics, and other specialized areas, enabling the university to develop into a comprehensive university.

As part of this development, the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Jam Faculty of Engineering were established as affiliated units of the university. By utilizing regional capacities, these units have played an important role in expanding higher education and training specialized human resources in the province.

Today, Persian Gulf University offers 114 academic fields and specializations at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels and is regarded as one of the comprehensive universities in southern Iran. The university has more than 7,200 students, 256 faculty members, and approximately 456 staff members, and continues to advance the quality of education, research, and technology.

The university's proximity to major oil, gas, petrochemical, energy, and marine industries has created opportunities for extensive scientific, research, and educational collaboration with industries in southern Iran. Through research projects, specialized services, and the education of capable graduates, Persian Gulf University plays an important role in providing specialized human resources and addressing the scientific and technological needs of industries, particularly in the South Pars region.

Achievements and Current Position

Over more than three decades of activity, Persian Gulf University has achieved valuable accomplishments in technology, innovation, and engagement with society and industry, in addition to expanding education and research. Through research and technological projects, the development of knowledge-based companies and innovation centers, the university has played an important role in addressing regional and national challenges and responding to the country's needs.

Among the university's achievements are its selection as a pilot entrepreneurial university, top rankings in organizing examinations conducted by Iran's National Organization for Educational Testing during various periods, scientific achievements by researchers and students in national and international festivals and events, and an active presence in recognized university ranking systems.

Persian Gulf University has also established extensive cooperation with oil, gas, petrochemical, energy, marine, and other economic sectors in southern Iran, taking advantage of the unique capacities of Bushehr Province. Through education, research, and specialized services, the university contributes to training an efficient workforce and developing technologies required by these industries.

In the areas of social responsibility and sustainable development, Persian Gulf University has also demonstrated significant commitment. Its selection as a “Green University” by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology and its hosting of the National Green University Conference reflect the university's attention to environmental protection, efficient resource management, and promotion of sustainable development.

Today, relying on its scientific heritage, educational and research capacities, specialized human resources, and strategic position along the Persian Gulf, Persian Gulf University continues its path of scientific, technological, and innovative development with the aim of responding to the needs of society, industry, and the country.

Drawing on its capable human resources, the scientific and cultural heritage of Bushehr Province, and the unique capacities of the Persian Gulf, the university seeks to improve the quality of education, research, technology, and innovation while making an effective contribution to training specialized human resources, producing knowledge, solving societal challenges, and achieving sustainable development. It also aims to further strengthen its position as one of the leading universities in southern Iran.
